I didn’t “come back to life.” I’d never been dead. But on a rainy Tuesday in Michigan, I woke up to muffled voices saying my name like it was already past tense.

We thought the scratching above the pantry was mice until the electrician pulled a vent cover and a warm, human smell hit us. Then he found a phone charger zip-tied to a joist like someone had been living up there.

The envelope showed up in my Portland mailbox like it had been waiting decades to find me. When I saw the postmark and the signature, my stomach dropped: it said it was from me, thirty years ago, and it knew things nobody else knew.

The call came from a hospital in Tacoma asking for “Mr. Daniel Mercer” to confirm a surgery consent. I told them they had the wrong man—until they read my Social Security number back to me.

I thought winning twice would fix my life. Instead, it made me a suspect, and the second check came with a warning: don’t cash it yet.
